It prefers areas with rocky substrates. This species can reach a length of SL. It can also be found in the aquarium trade. It is an extremely thick-lipped species; its specific epithet ''milomo'' is the word for "lips" in the Chewa language. It was given its common name VC10 by brothers Andy and Rick Biro of Coral Gables, Florida, who were among the first exporters of cichlids from Africa to America in the early 1970s.
